Profile/competences

Core competencies

Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg develops processes and systems for the conversion of biogenic waste and residual materials into sustainable next-generation fuels, basic chemicals and biochar; for the recycling of composite materials and plastics as well as for the preparation of products from conversion processes (e.g. pyrolysis oils) for the chemical industry.
In the field of bioenergy, the institute conducts research into low-emission combustion and firing technologies as well as the provision and storage of climate-neutral (high-temperature) process heat. It also has expertise in waste and resource strategies and life cycle assessment (LCA).

The Sulzbach-Rosenberg branch of the institute in the Nuremberg metropolitan region employs around 100 people and generates an annual turnover of around €11 million. The institute has been a member of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft since July 1, 2012.
