    • The Institute of Biochemical Engineering is dealing with all aspects of the technical use of biochemical reactions; The focus is on bioreactors and microbial production processes for the manufacturing of fine chemicals;
      New labs and technical facilities (Biotechnikum) with complete infrastructure for the cultivation of microorganisms and cells on a 1 mL - 200 L scale enable the Institute of Biochemical Engineering to analyse microbial reactions on a laboratory as well as on a semi-technical scale; An interdisciplinary team of scientists (biotechnology and chemical engineering) works on better understanding of bioprocesses and the development of new biotechnological products and processes in close cooperation with partners from chemicals industry, pharmaceutical industry, and process industry, respectively

    • Micro bioprocess engineering: Miniaturisation and parallelisation of stirred-tank reactors along with automation of process management; Biocatalysis: Development of new reaction engineering methods and devices to intensify whole cell biotransformations of hydrophobic, unstable and/or toxic substrates up to a technical scale; Metabolic process analysis: High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) will be applied to determine - and if necessary to identify - very low concentrations of metabolites in micro-organisms; Downstream processing: Improved unit operations, new devices and process integration
