Products/services: Research at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics At our institute we study the interaction of light with quantum systems, exploring areas where light and matter manifest themselves both as waves and particles. On the one hand, we experiment with light from single photons, which has completely different interference properties than an intense beam of light. If, on the other hand, we cool ensembles of matter particles that have mass to extremely low temperatures, we suddenly observe phenomena that are due to the wave nature of the particles. If we finally use extremely short and highly intensive light pulses containing billions of photons, the particle nature of the light no longer plays a role. We use the large electromagnetic light fields to control the movement of electrons in molecules or to accelerate electrons to relativistic energies.
