The private theatre with the function of a state stage was founded in Franconia in 1946 by the Berlin actor couple Lena Hutter and Oskar Ballhaus. Since 1960 it has been at home in the Maßbach Castle. Michael Ballhaus, the son of the founders, started here as a theatre photographer. The first children's plays by Paul Maar, the founders' son-in-law, were premiered in Maßbach. Today it is run by Anne Maar, daughter of Paul Maar and herself an excellent author of children's books.
