Study in Bavaria

Would you like to study in Bavaria? You’re not alone: about 10% of all students in Bavaria come from abroad. An extensive range of courses on offer, top-rate universities and the excellent level of education make Bavaria attractive for students from around the world. In Bavaria you can choose from over 900 bachelors degree courses and more than 850 masters degree courses, at 15 universities and 26 universities of applied sciences. This does not include university clinics, colleges of art and private universities.

An international range of study courses
The range of study courses offered in Bavaria is closely connected with foreign study courses. This ensures graduates and exchange students the international comparability of their qualifications, and makes it easier for the transcription of course results from and to other universities. Many of the numerous study courses in Bavaria are also taught in a foreign language (mostly in English). It is also possible, in co-operation with a foreign university, to acquire a joint degree.

International Office

Every university has an international office. This is your first and most important contact. The International Office takes care of international students and provides assistance in matters regarding the course itself, entry requirements, course planning, scholarships and university life.

You should contact the International Office at the university of your choice at least six months prior to the start of the academic year in order to solve possible problems and clarify any questions you may have. For foreigners embarking on a course of study, there are special orientation programmes and tutorials. In addition, you can take advantage of numerous initiatives at the universities, such as work groups, theatre groups, sports programmes and much more.

The International Office works closely with the competent state offices for your residence permit and is able to clarify quickly any questions regarding your stay.



Bavarian university centres

The Bavarian State Ministry of Science, Research and Art has set up its own competence centres in order to promote the collaboration and exchange with individual regions, with which Bavaria has traditionally had close contact and which are met with lively interest by students and scientists. They support both international contacts and the academic exchange of ideas and information.

The university centres are located at different universities in Bavaria, work independently and have developed different core matters in their task areas, depending on the target region.

The Bavarian university centre for China, located at the University of Bayreuth, is a service facility which provides advice both to students and scientists in Bavaria and China on co-operation and exchange. It also takes care of and promotes contacts with Chinese institutions.

Bavarian university centre for the Middle East, the Far East and South East Europe - BayHOST 
The Bavarian university centre for the Middle East, the Far East and South East Europe is located at the University of Regensburg. As a service centre for all Bavarian universities, it provides advice on matters of research co-operation, co-ordinates academic contacts in Eastern Europe, and supports the exchange of students and scientists. 

Bavarian-Indian centre for science and universities - BayIND
In addition to the co-ordination and promotion of co-operation in the university area, the Bavarian-Indian Centre for Science and Universities at the Hof University of Applied Sciences also supports commercial enterprise through workshops and a range of seminars. Students and scientists receive competent advice on mobility allowances and co-operation partners, plus offers of practical training and study courses.

Bavarian university centre for Latin America - BayLAT
The Bavarian university centre for Latin America at the University of Erlangen is a central starting point for the promotion of the international networking of Bavarian and Latin American universities. It also offers mobility, scholarship and practical training programmes for students from Bavaria and Latin America. 

Bavarian-French university centre - BFHZ
Founded as a joint institution of the Technical University of Munich and the Ludwigs-Maximilians University of Munich, the Bavarian-French university centre is considered a regional interface for the Franco-German co-operation in research and teaching. In addition to advising students, researchers and universities, the BFHZ also offers several promotional programmes and events on the Franco-German theme.

Bavarian-Californian university centre - BaCaTeC
With the Bavarian-Californian university centre at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Bavaria supports co-operation between researchers from Bavaria and California, with the focus on the high-tech areas of life sciences, IT and communications technology, new substances, environmental technology and mechatronics.
